Charles County Inmate Lookup

The Charles County Sheriff's Office website hosts the inmate lookup tool. Navigate to the Detention Center section and then to Inmate Lookup. You can search three ways: by name, by date of birth, or by booking number. The booking number gives the most precise results if you have it. Name searches work well too, but make sure you spell everything correctly.

Results show custody information, current charges, and bond amounts. The system covers everyone held at the Charles County Detention Center at 6905 Crain Highway, La Plata, MD 20646. It does not include people who have been transferred to state custody or released on bail. For those situations, the statewide DPSCS locator or VINELink are better choices.

All booking happens here. When law enforcement makes an arrest anywhere in Charles County, the person comes to this facility for the 24 hour booking process. That includes identity checks, fingerprinting, booking photos, medical screening, and property storage. Maryland Rule 4-212(f) requires the person to see a District Court Commissioner within 24 hours. Commissioners are on duty at all times. They review the charges, tell the person about their right to a lawyer, and make bail decisions under Maryland Rule 4-216.

The classification process at intake decides where each person is housed. Factors include the type of charges, criminal history, and any security concerns. Pretrial and sentenced inmates are separated. Medical and mental health needs also play a role in placement.

Note: The Sheriff's Office at 6915 Crain Highway is right next door to the detention center and handles records management.

The maximum account balance is $200. Phone deposits are available too. Each method has different fees and processing times, so the kiosk is usually fastest if you can get to La Plata.

Statewide Booking Search Resources

Three state-level tools work alongside the Charles County lookup. The DPSCS Incarcerated Individual Locator searches state prison inmates. It catches anyone who has been sentenced to more than 18 months and transferred from Charles County to a state facility. VINELink tracks custody changes across jurisdictions and lets you sign up for free alerts by email, text, or phone. The Maryland Judiciary Case Search shows court records from all Charles County cases, including charges, bail amounts, hearing dates, and dispositions.

All three tools are free. VINELink is especially useful for tracking someone through the system after booking. You get notified when there is a release, transfer, or status change. The court case search gives you the legal outcome side of the story, which the booking record itself does not cover.
